The biggest blockbuster of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Avengers: Endgame, was released on April 26th, shattering box office records and grossing over one billion dollars in only five days. Endgame crossed the two billion dollar mark in eleven days. So far, it grossed over 645 million dollars in North America and currently holds the record for biggest movie opening of all time.

While it may not be the end for the MCU by any means, Endgame is the culmination of 21 prior films in its interconnected universe, and it shows in both its impressive box office receipts and the grand scale of the movie itself. It is, in every sense, a celebration of the Marvel universe and all that led up to this point. It is a film about the passing of the torch with the old giving way to the new. The two characters who absolutely have the spotlight in this movie are Captain America and Iron Man; the team leader and the one who started it all, respectively. Both of these characters’ arcs throughout the previous movies come to their most intense moments here and feel satisfying and true to the characters.

Although it was obviously a difficult feat for directors Joe and Anthony Russo to include so many characters, subplots, themes, and settings, Endgame never feels too bloated or complicated. The large fan service scene at the end could confuse casual viewers who haven’t seen Infinity War, but the movie itself is, for the most part, straightforward. Although many viewers could get lost in the second act if they overthink it, the way these scenes are explained still does make sense and end up leading into the much more satisfying third act.

Though goofy and ridiculous at times, Endgame is an incredible conclusion to the Infinity Saga, with solid performances all around, breathtaking action, and fantastic CGI. The only downside is that Marvel won’t create anything of this scale for some time, and although they recently confirmed eight new movies through 2022, they will probably be playing it safe with more cookie-cutter movies, but at least for now, we can all enjoy the MCU’s crowning achievement.
