The Kings of Cook Street rivalry between Palm Desert and Xavier is well-known throughout the Coachella Valley. Palm Desert Baseball is also known across the valley as one of the better programs. The Palm Desert legacy is the favorite to win a league championship every season. Going into the game on March 22nd, 2019, the Saints were definitely the underdogs.

Sophomore Justin Johnson respected the history of the Aztecs but did not fear them. He believed, “that they were going to underestimate us because we have never beaten them before. As a team, we knew this would help us in attempting to secure the victory.” The Aztecs have future Division 1 players such as Infielder Jordan Sprinkle (UC Santa Barbara signee) and Pitcher Emiliano Torres (USC commit). Any team coming up against this combination would most likely be intimidated.

Through the first three innings, the score was tied 0-0. Palm Desert scored in the fourth and fifth innings. This put PD ahead 2-0 going into the sixth inning. Junior Rob Arzano explained that the team’s confidence level was still high and knew the game was not over. The Saints would go on to score three runs to give them the lead. Arzano said, “We knew the game was not out of reach. We were looking for a play that would get us going in the right direction. Once the first run went in, the momentum shifted towards us.” Sophomore Blake Browning stole home base to put them in front of the Aztecs 3-2 going into the 7th inning.

The Saints stopped the Aztecs from scoring in the last inning resulting them in the win against Palm Desert for the first time in Xavier history. Senior Daniel Martinez credited the whole team for the excellent performance. “Everyone contributed somehow. Coach Clark drew up a great play that allowed Browning to steal home base. A lot of spectators doubted us, and it felt outstanding to prove them wrong.” He also added that this win is one of his favorite memories at Xavier.

Beating Palm Desert is not the only goal that Xavier Baseball has in mind. They finished the Desert Empire League in third place with a record of 7-8 that put them in position to go postseason. All of the hard work put in the weight room and on the field this past offseason has paid off. However, they are not done yet and look to finish off strong.
