On February 23, Coachella Valley had its first ever KIND festival. This festival was hosted on the Tyson Ranch, which is owned and ran by Mike Tyson, former American boxer from 1985-2005. The first ever KIND festival had big-name performers, such as Miguel and ASAP FERG. The music festival was considered a huge success, attracting over 5,300 attendees. Despite its smaller size, this new-to-the-scene festival is starting to obtain comparisons to the famous Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals.

Coachella consists of 2 weekends: April 12-14 and April 19-21. In 2018, Coachella had an attendance of 200,000 people per weekend. This festival is known as one of the biggest festivals in the world, grabbing recognition from all corners of the world. Performing at Coachella this year are some of the world’s most famous artists, such as Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, Tame Impala, Kid Cudi, and Khalid. Sophomore Julian Lopez stated that he has been to Coachella 3 times. He added, “I have had some of the best experiences of my life there. Being able to see my favorite artists live is a different experience.”

For those who enjoy country music over hip hop and rap, Stagecoach is hosted the week right after Coachella weekend two. The dates are from April 26-28. Like Coachella, Stagecoach also attracts some of the biggest names in the music industry, such as Luke Bryan, Sam Hunt, and Jason Aldean all of whom are performing this year. Stagecoach is the largest country festival in the world, with an average attendance of over 75,000 people.

KIND Festival is trying to take the next step and jump to the level of Coachella and Stagecoach.  Co-host of the event, Tiernan Kelly, is a 2017 graduate from Xavier. According to Quinlan Kelly, sister of Tiernan Kelly, KIND festival is making moves to become a 3 day festival, similar to Stagecoach and Coachella. The festival’s goal is to become a bi-annual event, in October and February. Event planners hope that KIND will expand the festival reputation of the Coachella Valley. Quinlan Kelly further stated, “I expect KIND Festival to keep on thriving because of the amount of attention and success during the first ever showing.”
