The Unlikely Becomes the Most Likely In Rat Tail

Larrson On Attack!

On January 25th, 2019, Xavier hosted its Winter Rally in the school gym. To prep students for the Winter Formal Dance which was held at the Palm Springs Tramway; the Winter Rally packed a lot of Xavier Spirit and heightened excitement for the Winter Formal. Many events happened during the Rally, such as the naming of the Winter Formal Court, the Xavier Dance Team’s brilliant performance, Drumline’s incredible routines, and 2 huge fan favorite games: Rat Tail and the three-legged race. The games were a definite highlight. Everyone was excited during the competitive three-legged race, but the energy was nothing compared to the energy during Rat Tail. The crowd erupted when Thomas Larsson, Xavier’s World History teacher, took over the game, out-performing former D-1 athletes!

Xavier Teachers taking things seriously.

Mr. Larsson, known for his creative teaching style, was reluctant to participate–at least at the beginning. Junior Joshua Clark stated, “we wanted Mr. Larsson to step on the court because we knew he would make it very entertaining. Everyone wanted him to participate.” After the crowd of students convinced him to participate, he stepped onto the court. Mr. Larsson was viewed as an underdog compared to some of his competitors, James Dockery, Natalie Allen, and Darrell Lewis, each with a history in college sports: Before the event even started, the tension and energy from the crowd were extremely high.

As soon as the game began, some ‘ringer’ teachers were picked off right away. When the numbers got smaller, Larsson started playing defensively, protecting his rear at all cost. In the end, Larsson was left with Coach Lewis, Dockery, and Allen. Coach Lewis lost first, leaving Allen and Dockery. After Allen and Dockery formed an alliance, both of them rushed Larsson, causing him to play defensively even more aggressively. He took down Coach Allen. Right away Coach Dockery decided to advance towards Mr. Larsson even tackling him to the floor. The students were roaring! Dockery barely missed Larsson’s tail. Larsson got back up and attacked Coach Dockery. This time Larsson pulled Dockery’s tail off, thus ending the friendly game with Larsson as the victor.

Although the whole Rally had a lot of energy and the students were energetic throughout, Rat Tail was indisputably the event that made the students the craziest. Although this competition began as a small game idea that SLC found online, it ended up being one of the best events to have at the rallies. Rat Tail will definitely be used in future rallies, and the students will be prepared for the hype.

The Drumline is making its presence known.
