After finishing a successful Fall season of sports, it is time for the Xavier Athletic Program to move into the Winter season. At this point in the year, these athletic competitions are among the last few times Seniors will be able to play high school sports. This is their last chance to make a statement of who they are and leave Xavier with something to remember. This is their final opportunity to create or continue bonds with their team and coaching staff. It is a time of reflection and nostalgia. Here is a record of how a few Senior athletes are spending their last games with their team and their thoughts about their Xavier athletic careers.

Daniel Ruiz, Senior captain of the Boys Basketball team, shared that playing basketball is his favorite part about Xavier. He said “My favorite season was my sophomore year. We weren’t that good, but I enjoyed playing with the other Seniors that year such as Eddie Knee and Jared Clark.” Ruiz also described how his role on the team was different from others saying, “Through my whole time here, I was not much of a scorer. My job for the team was to defend, get rebounds, and hustle for every loose ball.” He also spoke about the tough practices they had. Even though the conditioning was really difficult, he enjoyed being with teammates.

John Stark Vuksic, Senior (Boys Soccer), has positive thoughts for his time playing at Xavier. He shared, “I have made good use of my time playing soccer here. I had the best teammates, who got along on and off the field, and coaches that I could ask for.” Vuksic also expressed that he played every game like it was his last and has no regrets. He hopes that through his leadership he made the soccer program better for future Saints. Vuksic wants to inspire underclassmen and motivate them to be successful. He believed he gave everything he had at practice and games and would not go back and change anything.

Olivia Quagliani, Senior (Girls Water Polo), is another athlete in her final season at Xavier. She said that playing for Coach Valovic and with her team has been fun a ride.  She stated, “We have been very successful the past few years, and everyone plays very hard. I am grateful for the relationships I have made throughout my years of playing. This sport is how I made some of my best friends.” Quagliani continued saying her favorite memory of playing Water Polo at Xavier was in her Sophomore year when the team made it to the CIF Finals. Remembering that historic season Quagliani expressed, “We lost that year but it was the best year Xavier Water Polo has ever had. We were all so close, we felt like a family.” She also said that she tried to make this the best possible season she could for her final one.

Right now can be the most stressful time for Seniors due to writing college applications or waiting to hear back from colleges, while trying to juggle school and sports. At the same time, they are trying to make the most out of their last seasons in sports many truly love. Every practice, film time, and game matters. This is a difficult task but with the support of the teachers, their coaches, and their teammates, they can accomplish anything.
