Xavier history was made by our Girls Volleyball team, which had great success this year both locally and on the state level. For the first time, the Saints’ Girls Volleyball team made it to both semifinals in CIF and State. The talent and energy that our volleyball team brought when they played along with great friendships within the team helped make the monumental season that much sweeter. The tight-knit team bonded in a way that made the team almost unstoppable–especially when they competed against the stellar teams in Division 4 of CIF.

The great success in playoffs meant the team moved up a division in CIF, slowly making their way up to the top. The Division 4 competition was tough and the players are well trained. This made success a challenge, but luckily, our Saints were up to the challenge. Once Xavier’s team made it to CIF semifinals, they received an automatic bid in the State tournament. Although they lost in State, Sophomore Sophia Callahan said, “We have completed our goal of going to State, and we are already preparing for next year. Next year we’re preparing to make new goals and make even more Xavier volleyball history.” Going to State was an exciting experience for the team. Junior Golden Hinchen said that to prepare for the epic match, “We mentally focus each and every practice, leaving everything we have on the court.”

Every player was critical to the team’s success in some way. Sophomore Sophia Callahan said, “Although we have our starting six, the girls off the court make just as much of a difference in our success with the attitudes and tone they set.” The entire team supported each other and became allies both on and off the court, forming lasting friendships. Junior Golden Hinchen said, “Personally, being on this team has genuinely made me a happier person. I love being around each and every person, and they bring so much joy and laughter into my life.” This goes to show that the friendships made on this volleyball team made them closer than just teammates; they are now family.

The team did not just become super close overnight, they came together in many different ways. Sophomore Callahan said that they participated in “team bonding exercises that helped us learn how to listen and trust each other which is the most important thing for a team to have together on the court.” Junior Hinchen explained, “Everyone has bonded so closely to each together with all of the trips, games, and practices that we spent together.” These connections helped contribute to the success of the team and helped reconcile each other from any previous drama and attitudes towards each other that previously distracted team members. Way to go, Saints!
