The Sophomore Class was offered the chance to reflect on their lives and God’s presence in their lives on the first Sophomore Arrupe Retreat of the year. The retreat was on November 2nd to November 3rd. The group of over forty Sophomores, seven student leaders, and six faculty members stayed the night at Pathfinder Ranch. The retreat began after school on Friday when the kids drove up the mountain to reach their overnight getaway. The Arrupe retreat allows the students to deepen their relationship with each other and with God.

The Sophomores had few expectations for their trip. Malia Reid and Alondra Carrillo shared what they expected. Malia said, “I thought we would have more bonding time as a class in free time.” Although there was free time on day two, Malia was expecting more so she could strengthen relationships she had with others. Alondra said, “I thought it was going to be more like the Freshman Retreat.” Overall, though, Alondra was happy with her small group and was glad they got some free time the second day so she could reflect.

Despite their initial expectations, there were influential activities that were planned for the Sophomores which further shaped Malia’s and Alondra’s experience. Most students had a favorite and powerful moment. The evening was filled with multiple hands on activities and opportunities to reflect on various aspects of life. Alondra’s favorite part of the retreat was when every person were encourage to let go of worries. Alondra said, “I felt relieved. It symbolized me getting rid of my worries.” Malia also appreciated this, but she enjoyed another exercise as well. Malia said, “It made me feel noticed by others and important in their lives.” These two encounters helped Alondra and Malia better understand their retreat experience.

The student leaders were Jesus Arzapalo, Sean Babekian, Jackie Cordero, Stacey Dela Serna, Timothy Fitzpatrick, Olivia Quagliani, and Ale Wiggins. These student leaders had experience leading others and were prepared to accompany the Sophomores. Ale Wiggins loved her group and said, “I want all the Sophomores to know that the leaders are always here for you.” She also mentioned that her favorite part of leading retreats is the fact that she can always find meaning in the planned activities, and she enjoys connecting with everyone. Ale is also grateful this Thanksgiving season for the relationships she has with others, especially the new ones she has made with her small group. Likewise, Malia shared gratitude for the opportunity to meet new people and talk to people with whom she does not normally talk. Alondra expressed thankfulness for all the leaders and their willingness to serve the underclassmen.

The Senior leaders: Jackie Cordero, Jesus Arzapalo, Stacey Dela Serna, Ale Wiggins, Sean Babekian, Timothy Fitzpatrick, Olivia Quagliani.

The first 2018 Sophomore Arrupe Retreat was a great way to kick off the Thanksgiving season. Being able to meet new people, create new relationship, and feel loved inspired everyone involved to feel important and blessed. All the Sophomores that went expressed their appreciation for those in their lives, which is important to do. As this month is a time for Thanksgiving, be sure to appreciate the little things in life, just as the Sophomores found beauty in the bonds they formed over that one night. Overall, the retreat was a successful trip for the Sophomores who went; they were able to reflect on their lives and positively express their gratitude for themselves and others.
