2018 Freshman Retreat: A Truly Great Experience

The Freshman Retreat was a memorable weekend, to say the least. Those who were a part of this amazing experience for all Freshmen know how special it was. The Freshman Retreat was surrounded with mystery and crowded with misdirections of what would happen. One student stated that they thought everyone was going to Six Flags. This goes to show how far students will go to keep the Freshman Retreat a secret so that the experience is new and unforgettable.

The retreat started laid back and relaxed so that the Freshmen were able to get used to the campus as a retreat space. Even though they had already been at the school for some time, this was still an essential aspect for making the experience as comfortable and welcoming as possible. Parents were greeted and made to feel comfortable. This made for a seamless transition to saying goodbyes and letting parents know that their children were in a safe environment.

The retreat endeavored to build community and to engage Freshmen in communication with each other. Leaders built upon those two aspects nicely and created friendships that many did not expect were going to happen, which was one of the purposes of this retreat.

The day and evening activities were designed to create special moments for all Freshmen to cherish throughout their whole high school experience. Ultimately, they will bring the memories of that evening with them wherever they decide to go in life. Suffice it to say the day was an emotional one and a prayer service, ice cream, and trivia played a part. Rest and sleep were necessary to prepare for the last day of the retreat.

Everyone was greeted with delicious food in the morning and conversations all around. The official Freshman Retreat photo and Mass followed. Special prayers and blessings for Matthew Shupp, Kai Killebrew, and Jaylen Rushin were part of the Mass. Father Jack loved up the retreatants, their families, and the greater community.

The reverberations from this weekend will continue for retreatant and leader alike. A big thank you to all the Freshmen, Leaders, Gophers, teachers, and Xavier’s Campus Ministry for creating such a memorable retreat. It will be a cherished memory for all involved.
