As the 2018-2019 school year started more people have joined the Xavier Community. This year the class of 2022 became part of Xavier,  and so did some new teachers. It’s just as important to build a relationship with the new teachers as it is with new students. Building relationships welcome new teachers so they feel included in the Xavier Community. Two of the new teachers were interviewed for the Examiner’s 1st edition of the 2018-19 school year. These two new teachers were asked why they chose to teach at Xavier, what they are most excited for, what they hope to accomplish. Moreover, these two teachers shared their expectations and a little bit about themselves as well.

Mrs. Vazquez is a new teacher at Xavier; she teaches Freshmen Algebra. Before coming to Xavier she worked in business and taught at St. Teresa’s for 9 years. For the past 2 summers, Mrs. Vazque taught Algebra 1 at Xavier. It was through these summer classes she realized she wanted to teach at a Catholic high school.

Xavier has had some turnover in the Math Department–some teachers left after offering a year of service. The Examiner asked Mrs. Vazquez if she planned to teach at Xavier for more than a year; her response was, “ Yes! I’m planning to teach at Xavier for more than a year.” That is good to hear. When asked if she felt nervous coming to a new school, she shared, “ Yes, when it comes to change there is always something I will be nervous about.” Nerves notwithstanding, Mrs. Vazquez is excited to get involved with service and take the students out to Mecca. Her instructional goal is to help students realize that they can do well in math. Welcome, Mrs. Vazquez!

The next teacher interviewed was Mrs. Gaitens. She is in the Science Department, and she teaches Juniors and Seniors. Before coming to Xavier she was a chemical engineer for 10 years. She was also a stay at home mom for about 3 years, and last year she taught at Joshua Springs Christian School. The principal from Sacred Heart recommended looking into teaching at Xavier. And so she did. Mrs. Gaitens would also like to have a long teaching career at Xavier. Her goal is to get her students acquainted with Chemistry and discover that it’s fun! Mrs. Gaitens wants to help her students develop an appreciation for the sciences. When asked about being nervous about starting in a new school,  she responded, “ Yes, there’s always a level of nerves but I’m mostly excited.”

The new teachers expressed a lot of desire for connecting students to each of their subjects. There is great potential for inviting students to become more interested in the subjects and improve their knowledge of those subjects. Welcome to Xavier! Xavier is happy to have you.
