The First Day of School

Halos were ready for the Freshmen!

Halos were ready for the Freshmen!

August 16, 2018, the most dreaded day of the school year–the beginning of a new school year. As summer came to a close, Xavier students enjoyed their last free days with friends, crammed in summer homework assignments, and prepared for the inevitable first day of school. Faculty, on the other hand, seemed to joyfully prepare for another upcoming school year: printing detailed syllabi, decorating perspective classrooms and preparing the workload for their students. Parents rejoiced as their children finally went back to school and homes were still for the first time in two months. The first day of school reunited friends who missed opportunities of hanging out during the summer, allowed freshman to meet their new teachers and brought the Xavier community as a whole back together. Of course, alongside the social aspects of the first day, the long lines for receiving textbooks, schedules, and I.D pictures were the main reasons Xavier students left their beds.

Freshmen experienced their classes on a ‘mini’ schedule. This helped new students know where to go and when.

Incoming Freshmen often fear this day, their first day of high school. Xavier eased the transition from a middle school to high school with the help of student Halos. Xavier’s Halos waited anxiously outside in the heat, preparing to meet the incoming students they’d be guiding through the year. As the Freshmen began arriving they’re were shown around campus and taken to pick up textbooks, schedules, and I.D pictures. A brief “mini-schedule” allowed Freshmen to meet their teachers and figure out the layout of the campus.

Freshman, William Lawrence

Junior and Halo, Grace Sobrero, accompanied by Freshman Mia Lopez.

One Freshman, William Lawrence, readily prepared for his first day by decorating notebooks and going over the school curriculum. “I’m looking forward to experiencing Homecoming, Water Polo tryouts, and Pro week”, William said when asked what he’s most excited for this year. Another Freshman, Mia Lopez, started her day by watching Netflix and mentally preparing herself for the daunting first day of high school. However, Mia said that any anxiety she had quickly went away after meeting her Halo, Grace Sobrero, who showed her around and made Xavier feel all the more welcoming.

As Sophomores arrived for their second year back at Xavier, they exuded confidence while walking around campus. Knowing the layout of each building and where their new classes were located, the Sophomore class quickly rushed through the scheduling process. Sophomore Kaitlyn Daft described her first day saying, “It was super fun and exciting but at the same time a little nerve-racking.” Even returning students experienced the first day jitters, a normal feeling that quite possibly everyone shared. Although Kaitlyn experienced those first day nerves, her nerves were soon calmed when she met with friends. She said, “My favorite moment from my first day back to Xavier was meeting up with all my friends, talking about what we did over the summer, and comparing our schedules to see if we had any classes together.”

Junior, Christoper Ibrahim.

Juniors and Seniors alike came in the first day as the reigning upperclassmen. Mainly consisting of Halos and regular students willing to help, these classes effortlessly moved through the day. Christopher Ibrahim, a junior here at Xavier, prepared for his first day by buying school uniforms/supplies and finishing up his summer homework. Junior year is all about growth; Chris takes this to heart, saying, “This year I’m really looking forward to growing both spiritually and mentally, forming and improving my relationships with others.”

For the Seniors, the tradition of Senior Sunrise was carried out, beginning at 5:45 and promptly ended at 6:30 with “Class of 2019” doughnuts. While it was their final first day of high school, many Seniors were still looking to impact the Xavier community in their remaining months. Jose Bautista stated that “although I’m a Senior, I am looking forward to getting involved in new activities that I may have missed in previous years.” He further said, “I’m really just looking forward to being a leader on campus and in sports. I want to be a good role model for the younger kids.”

The first day of school was filled with ups and downs and varying emotions. Whether there was a sense of excitement to see one’s friends, the anxiety of coming into high school, or the nerves of it simply being the first day, there was a bit of ‘feels’ for everyone. The reality is the Xavier community has been brought back together beginning another cycle–rallies will continue, Homecoming will be here and pass, sports will go in and out of season, and the preparation for next year will begin again. But for now…2018-2019, we have arrived!

Campus Ministry director, Mr. Joubert, addressed the senior class at Senior Sunrise.
