Back to School Night was a huge success this year. Many parents came, and teachers were excited about the turnout. A lot of time was put into creating a memorable Back to School Night. It was a chance for parents to get to know their kids’ teachers. It does not matter if you are a returning student or a new student, parents often want to get to know who is teaching their student new material that will help to mold them into men and women for and with others.

Mr. Larsson chatting it up with parents.

Teachers put time and effort to make an important and memorable first impression on the parents. Mr. Larsson prepared by reviewing his, “syllabus in order to emphasize the most important elements of the course.” He also found it helpful to create a handout for parents or guardians to take home since they end up meeting the each of the teachers briefly throughout the night. This is a great idea due to the fact that people can only retain so much information at once. When meeting seven teachers in about an hour and a half, all with different personalities and classroom rules, “a small handout can be helpful.”

Ms. Montez addressed Junior parents.

Ms. Montez wanted to make sure that parents were able to “put a face on the name of who is taking their kids to East L.A. and The Border.” Ms. Montez wanted to make sure that the parents knew not only is she a teacher, but she is also a Campus Minister. This means she supports her students not only in the classroom but also outside of the classroom with immersion trips. Ms. Montez was ready to answer questions about service hours. She believed that the Back to School Night went well and thought that it was great to meet the parents of her students. Ms. Montez is well informed in the art of presenting and meeting with parents, so preparing for Back to School Night was easy for her.

Whether you are the type of student to go with your parent, or just give them your schedule, you might agree that after Back to School Night, parents were well informed about what goes on at Xavier. Behavior and guidelines for what is required of each student were mentioned in many classes. Most parents were looking for teachers that are “helpful” and “well informed of the subject matter.” Parents also thought that one of the most important rules in a classroom is to “respect your fellow classmates and respect the teacher.” Parents believed that Back to School Night was not only a great way to get to know the teachers at Xavier but was also a great way to get to know other parents of students in the same classes.

Overall, Back to School Night was a success. Many eager parents could not wait to meet new people, while some were just trying to find their way around the campus. Luckily, for those lost or confused, there were cheerleaders guiding the parents to their respective classrooms. So, whether parents were seasoned parents of Xavier students or were at the event for the first time, The Back To School Night continued to be one of the best ways to get to know Xavier.
