Firefighters on Westmont College’s Campus http://westmont.edu/a/thomas-fire.html

The devastating Thomas Fire, that started on December 4, 2017, was a desolation that was not without consolation. There were many unsung heroes, and the Westmont College Fire Brigade are some firefighters who did not get much credit for their heroism. The beloved Westmont College firefighters turned the Westmont College campus into a sanctuary for all firefighters who helped in extinguishing the Thomas Fire. Although the campus was evacuated, the courageous Westmont Fire Brigade stayed to protect the college and offer comfort to fellow firefighters.

The Westmont Fire Brigade was started in 2008, after the

Tea Fire threatened the campus. The brigade consists of twelve volunteers, all of whom work on Westmont’s campus for various custodial jobs and safety regulations. All members of the Brigade have wildland firefighting certification, in order to be prepared for any threat to the student body.  During the Thomas Fire crisis, the Brigade helped by pulling 12-hour shifts containing hot spots and replenishing supplies for members of Cal Fire who used the campus as a base of operations.

Without the support from Westmont College and their prepared Fire Brigade, the Thomas Fire may have impacted more people than it already had. These humble heroes responded with valor to a cause greater than themselves.

How To Help:
