The newest installment in the Call of Duty franchise made by Sledgehammer Games has doubled the sales of the previous Call of Duty release. With over $500 million dollars in sales within the first 3 days of being released, indicates this Call of Duty has had a very successful release. Due to the popularity of the franchise, the Examiner asked a couple of Xavier history teachers to play and answer some questions related to WWII.

Mr. Daffern and Mr. Larsson agree to participate, and although they had no prior experience playing the game, they both did relatively well. When Mr. Larsson was asked about his interest in WWII he responded with “yes, I have always had an interest in WWII because it has clear good and bad guys”. Mr. Larsson was also asked if he could challenge one teacher in this game he called out Mrs. Hach! Heads up, Mama Hach, Call of Duty may be in your near future! Although Mr. Larsson did not make it past the first level before we finished the interview, he seemed to have enjoyed the game.

While Mr. Daffern played, he was asked about his interest in WWII. His response was interesting as he believes WWII “…changed the way we do battle.” This change was due in part, in Mr. Daffern’s words, “…there were so many people involved.” A war that encompasses the entire planet truly will change the rules of engagement. Mr. Daffern, when asked about who he would challenge in this game, said without hesitation–Mr. Hunter. That is one Call of Duty challenge this reporter would like to see!

Even though this is a game made for entertainment, the true significance of WWII and honoring the memory the countless lives that were lost on all sides of the war should never be diminished.  WWII deserves to be treated with the utmost respect. Studying it–even in a game format–encourages us to not make the same mistakes–thus repeating a particularly difficult history.
